When we share with people that we travel full time their first question (even if they don’t ask it) is usually how do you afford to do that?! Are you rich?! Let me answer that question right away – NO. We are not rich and we never have been rich in the sense of money. We are rich in every other aspect of our life but no we are not independently wealthy.
Part of what inspired us to hit the road was to be able to get out of debt. We had credit card debt that we weren’t comfortable with. Where the heck did all those charges come from?! It’s crazy how fast you can accumulate credit card debit.
Before traveling we were living paycheck to paycheck. We had the means to afford the lifestyle we were living, but money was ALWAYS on our mind. We had about $2,000 in our savings account and that was it. We had a few stocks and 401k’s, but not a whole lot of extra money, which made us really nervous and uncomfortable any time unforeseen expenses came up.
It was very liberating and rewarding to be able to pay off all of our credit card debt, medical bills, etc. when we sold our house. WOW! What a weight lifted off our shoulders. Now we are learning to spend less so we don’t have to work more. Our goal is for both of us to work 20 hours a week and that is it. This means we have to be careful with our money but we are OK with that because it’s our choice to give things up so we have more time together as a family.
Don’t get me wrong we still like to spend money and go out to eat and do cool things that cost money. However, now when we do spend our money, we are doing it with intention. We are working towards enjoying money and not dreading every penny that we spend.
One of the things that really helped us gain this new perspective on money was taking a course called the “30 Day Money Cleanse“. It is an awesome course that helps you learn what your relationship is with money and how you can make it more positive. By doing that you will begin to manifest more money for yourself.
It’s not about just hoping for money and it appears. It’s about diving into yourself and better understanding what your relationship is with money and how to improve it. I was so surprised to realize how negative I was when it came to money. I don’t like that I keep hearing myself say that’s too expensive when the kids want something or when I want something. I am now aware that my relationship with money has been so negative and I wanted to change that! Yes we will have to say no to things because they do cost to much money but usually it isn’t because we don’t have the money but instead because we are choosing to spend it on something else.
I think that is an important thing for us to model to our kids and for us to share with them. It isn’t that we can’t have that because it is too expensive, but instead we are going to use our money to go buy yummy food or do a cool activity.
Every time I was spending money it was brining me down and I felt so guilty. Now I have a better perspective on how to enjoy the money I do have and enjoy spending it! Not getting a sinking feeling in my stomach every time I had to buy something. Or getting upset when I think I don’t have the money for the things I really want. Now I strive to enjoy spending our money and knowing that I am spending with intention.
It also helped me to see that it is OK to ask for and to want more money and that I deserve it! There is so much abundance in this world and for some reason we feel like the abundance isn’t for us but for someone else. And that just isn’t true! There is enough for everyone if we are willing to look for it, ask for it, and take it when it presents itself.
One of the things I really loved about the course is that it had substance. It wasn’t all about chanting “Give me money!” and all of a sudden it appears. It was about setting up the right mindset to accept money and then working hard to get it.
And I loved that the course focused on more than just money. It also focused on understanding more about myself and showing me how important it is to take time to dive into your thoughts and feelings and learn how to work through them. Who has time for that right? Well through the course I learned how important that is and how it all fits into this big overall picture. And that we can’t accept abundance if we aren’t ready for it.
The private Facebook group for the Cleanse was another great tool where daily videos were posted to help keep me focused on the course. I was able to be a part of a group of amazing people who were so open about their experiences and what they were getting out of the Cleanse.
There is something about moving through a transition with a group of people that makes it so much better and more rewarding. I participated now and then, but really enjoyed just hearing what other people had to say and what they were experiencing.
